Sokkia New SHC25 and SHC25A Data Collectors

Sokkia Corporation has added two new models to its data collector lineup to expand users' choices. The SHC25/25A weighs 11.3 oz (320g) including battery, and measures 3.23 x 5.75 x 1.30 in. (82 x 146 x 33mm). The SHC25 series is a light and smal data collector which meets the US military standard that withstands extremely rough conditions.
Conforming to the latest MIL-STD-810G, both models have cleared the drop tests from a height of 5 ft. (1.52m). These models are also rated to IP65 of the IEC standard, eliminating powder dust and driving rain as potential problems.
"The new SHC25 series is not only an affordable choice, but also features superior portability, ruggedness and ease of use in the field," said Brice Walker, vice president of survey sales.
Each model integrates the 20-channel L1 GPS receiver that provides point positioning accuracy of 5 meters (16.4 ft.) and DGPS accuracy of 1 to 3 meters (3.3 to 9.9 ft.) using SBAS signals. In addition, the SHC25A model includes built-in 3 MP auto focus camera, electronic compass and altimeter to meet the increasing demand for GIS data collection capability.
"We have designed these new models on basis of our extensive experience in the data collector business," said Walker. "One Li-ion rechargeable battery supplies enough power for almost one day, but we focused on the field replaceable battery design that gives the maximum convenience to the users."
The SHC25 series features the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, 533MHz processor, and 256MB SDRAM. Sokkia's data collection software Spectrum Survey Field, as well as the construction layout software Sokkia Layout Field, fully runs on the SHC25/25A, meaning that these data collectors have abilities to control all Sokkia GPS/GNSS receivers, total stations and digital levels.
Sokkia now offers four choices. The SHC250 model features the ultra-fast 806MHz processor, while the SHC2500 offers quick data entry with a full alphanumeric keyboard. Spectra Precision GL700 Slop Laser

A farmer called me the other day about a patch of land that he needed to farm. Apparently the land was not flat but neither was it sloped in one direction. It had ridges and breaks, and small hills. The customer informed me that it was a large piece of land and he needed it sloping slightly so that when it rains the water would run off in one direction and not pool in one spot and cause the plants to die.
I got an email yesterday from a company that designs and builds pools. These pools are sometimes the large Olympic-type pools for commercial clients and sometimes small and unique pools for private citizens. They needed a laser that sloped in both axis. The Olympic type pools would just need one axis to slope but some of their smaller customers want to have fancy pools that slope in one direction or two or change their degree of slope in the middle of the pool.
A big golf company contacted me and told me that they were creating a new golf course and their five year old laser was just stolen. They wanted something that would give them the degree of slopes that they required on the field, but can also be used to create perfectly flat land. They needed the range to be far and accurate and would stay up to speed technology wise.
In all three instances I recommended the Spectra Precision GL700 Series. There was no doubt in my mind that the GL700 series would outperform the customers’ expectations.
The Spectra GL700 provides years of durable and precise performance on the job site that will keep you at the competitive edge. With the GL700 Series Lasers, Spectra Precision has created an innovative solution built for today’s construction industry, which is economical but more advanced than most lasers in its class. Its features range from a single grade laser to an advanced, long range radio controlled steep grade transmitter.
The Spectra GL700 series is for applications that require maximum stability and accuracy. Using its PlaneLok feature, you can virtually eliminate beam drift by locking the laser beam to a fixed elevation. All you have to do is simply set your hand held receiver at the desired elevation, select the PlaneLok mode on the remote control and the laser beam will remain exactly at that elevation all day long, regardless of the wind or temperature changes. This increased immovability and precision means less rework, better material control and a better bottom line.
Furthermore, the long-range remote control, with two-way communications between the laser and the remote, now allows you to change grade on the fly without approaching the transmitter. No more long walks to the laser to fix the grade. By remotely changing and reading grade information, you can speed setup and reduce costly communication errors.
The Grade Matching Mode and Automatic Axis Alignment also save you time and effort. These two features allow you to get grade faster and with more accuracy. If slope match is needed but you don’t know what the grades is, simply set your receiver at the same height as the transmitter, go to your remote point, press a button on the wireless remote and the transmitter automatically matches and displays the grade without returning to the laser. The GL700 Lasers also allow simple alignment of either side of any grade axis to the desired remote point. This simple, one-person operation lets you roughly align the transmitter to within 40 degrees of the remote point. You can then go to your remote point and, with a simple button press on the wireless remote, the axis is automatically aligned. The remote provides immediate confirmation of the alignment.
On site, you’ll find that the advanced features quickly translate into productivity and accuracy. Complex alignments are automatic and virtually foolproof. With the powerful, long-range remote control option it only takes one person to accurately set up and operate the grade laser. With the GL700 series, you can count on quicker set-ups and more productivity for more profitability. Get the right laser for the right job, get one of the GL700 Series Lasers.

Spectra Precision Grade Laser GL512/GL522

This past winter vacation, my family and I decided to take up skiing. None of us had ever gone before and we were all very excited for the experience. When my family arrived at the Ski Resort we dumped our luggage in our rooms and grabbed the new gear we just bought. We ran outside and looked out at the huge mountain with people skiing downhill. There was some shared disappointment when we realized that we had to start at the beginners slope before we could try anything else.

My family rushed to the beginners slope to receive instruction on how to ski properly and to start practicing. The beginners “slope” look more like flat land then a hill. I wondered briefly whether we would actually be able to ski down it or whether it was only to practice standing. However, when I tried to ski I found that the beginner’s hill was indeed sloped. I recognized that it must be sloped at a very slight angle or at a 5-10% slope. The only way the Ski resort could have achieved a perfect slope like that was by using a Spectra Precision GL512 or GL522 Grade Laser.

The Spectra Precision GL512 or GL522 Lasers are rugged, cost-effective, automatic self leveling lasers that do three jobs—level, grade and vertical alignment. The difference between the GL512 and the GL522 grade laser is that the GL512 is a single slope and the GL522 is a dual slope laser. This means that the GL512 can only slope in one axis while the GL522 can slope in both. Both lasers have a large grade range from -10% to +15%.

Both the GL512 and the GL522 include a two-way remote control with a built in back-lit display. You can do everything with the remote control that you can do with the laser keypad for up to 330 feet away from the laser! The ability to make grade changes from anywhere on the job greatly reduces setup time and speeds up the operation.

Additionally, the Spectra Precision GL512 and GL522 Grade Laser self-plumb in the vertical position to allow an even wider range of applications such as tilt up and curtain wall plumbing, anchor bolt installations and plus form. Both units also incorporate automatic temperature and grade compensation for high accuracy in any weather or geographical locations. The Electronic Leveling Vibration Filter on the Spectra Lasers dampen vibrations typically experienced on tall tripods, in high winds, or on high vibration jobsites. On both models, the laser beam can be turned off electronically on up to three sides of your choice. This capability eliminates interference with other crews on the job site by keeping the beam from straying into other work areas.

New wireless communication between the HL750 Receiver and the Spectra Precision GL512/GL522 laser provides automatic Grade Match. Grade Matching allows the measurement of unknown grade values between two points. Grade Match displays the existing grade over unknown ground and eliminates time consuming, error prone calculations, time spent searching for grade plans, and over excavating. PlaneLok is also available in both the horizontal and vertical planes. PlaneLok automatically locks the beam on the receiver and keeps it on grade. This eliminates all environmental factors that may induce an error. Furthermore, the HL750 Receiver works with a second HL750 for long range wireless remote display and monitoring.
The Spectra GL512 and GL522 Grade Lasers are great for general construction leveling such as forms, footers and pads. They also provide precision placement of concrete for critical specification surfaces over long distance. The GL512 and GL522 can also be used for sports fields, driveways, ramps and drainage, steep slopes, road embankments, ditch banks, parking garage, mini-mart, tennis courts, golf course and of course ski slopes!
